What causes obesity? As with many medical conditions, the caloric imbalance that results in obesity often develops from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Since 1980, the total number of obese and overweight Americans has doubled. California ranks 36th in adult obesity with 22.7 percent and 32nd in childhood obesity with 13.2 percent. Obesity is second only to smoking as the most preventable cause of death.

Body fat is referred to as adipose tissue. It is a loose connective tissue. The main role of body fat is to store energy for use later by the body. It also helps to cushion and insulate the body from shock when we move, walk, jump or subject it to any other kind of movement.

Four Basic Body Types

There are four basic body types: Liver Belly, Thyroid, Adrenal, and Ovary. Most of us are a combination of these body types; however, we all have a predominant type. There are general characteristics or symptoms that go along with each type.

Liver Belly: Imagine you’re at the beach and you see a man small in stature, with thin arms and legs, yet his belly sticks out (pot belly). This is the characteristic liver belly type. This type of fat distribution is not exclusive to men. Women may have this type of belly fat as well, simply not as extreme. Often the person will experience bloating, flatulence, belching, right shoulder and mid back pain or soreness without any trauma. Generally, there are digestive disturbances.

Thyroid: This body type had fat distribution throughout their entire body (face, neck, shoulders and legs). Characteristics are fatigue even after having a full night of sleep, cravings of carbohydrates and fat for energy, hair loss, thinning of the outer portion of the eyebrows, and brittle fingernails. They are often cold, especially their hands and feet. This is the person who chooses to wear socks to bed at night, even in the summer time.

Adrenal: The belly fat on the abdomen drops or sags down towards the legs. Because our adrenal glands are our stress glands, generally men and women who have this body type have been under an enormous amount of stress for a sustained period of time. Adrenal body types often complain of chronic low back pain, fibromyalgia, and fatigue. When walking up the stairs, their thighs feel heavy and often they crave salt at night.

Ovary: Exclusive to women. In this body type, the woman is usually petite above the navel and from the mid-thigh down. The progression of the OVARY type of adipose fat deposits seems to be basically in the hip and thigh. The development of increased fat increases the potential of ovarian cysts. Women with this body type often experience fatigue during their menstrual cycle, and also some “brain fog.” Their menstrual pain is in the lower back or hip areas, and sometimes in the knees. Often these women will have a history of pre-menstrual syndrome, and they gain weight (water retention) during their cycle. They may have a history that includes lack of libido, infertility, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and menstrual cycle acne and mood swings. During their period they experience heavy flow, constipation, and thinning of the hair.

When you recognize the type of body fat you have, you will be able to address weight loss with a plan and a purpose. There are specific, managed diets that address each body type and allow you to release the fat and keep it off.

He still managed to find the time to come out with The Red Light District, an album with content that rarely reflects the illicit-sounding title. Ludacris is more relaxed than ever, his mix of off-the-wall wisecracks and lofty proclamations established immediately after the intro. No other MC could rattle off a stream of Austin Powers riffs without sounding corny, which he duly proves over Green Lantern’s apt spin-cycle treatment of Quincy Jones’ “Soul Bossa Nova”: “Causin’ lyrical disasters, it’s the master/Make music for Mini-Mes, models, and Fat Bastards/These women trying to get me out my Pelle Pelles/They strip off my clothes and tell me, ‘Get in my belly!’/Stay on the track, hit the ground running like Flo Jo/Sit back in time and never lost my mojo.” Luda hasn’t slipped into the complacent lap of luxury as deeply as some of his fellow platinum contemporaries, but it’s evident that he’s not as hungry as he once was. A handful of top-level productions help make up for this, such as the Medicine Men’s sufficiently rowdy work on “Get Back,” Timbaland’s tribal/safari-like backdrop on “The Potion” (one of his most radical productions since Ms. Jade’s “Big Head,” with owl hoots and wild-bird caws in place of synth notes and percussion accents), and L.T. Moe’s squirting/jingling loose-booty funk on “Spur of the Moment” (which could be mistaken for a DJ Quik track, especially since he MCs on it).

One of the most common things that I hear women say is how to get rid of that extra fat around their stomach..often referred as a “pooch”. Many women think if they do a 1000 sit-ups a day that will get rid of it. Not true!

Having a flatter stomach actually has nothing to do with doing countless sit-ups, but has everything to do with having less body fat. Each time you lower your body fat that “pooch” will go down!

Here are 4 key things that you can do to reduce your body fat:

Eating more lean protein. Most women I find after they turn 30 tend to eat less protein and what they don’t realize is that protein helps keep your metabolism high! Some great sources of protein can be found in chicken, fish, and egg whites.

Doing cardiovascular exercise with intensity: If you are leisurely just walking and not breathing hard and working up a sweat, chances are you are not pushing your body enough to burn off that fat. The more intense your workout is the more fat your body will burn.

Include resistance training: Some women will focus only on cardiovascular exercise and leave out the weight training. Your metabolism actually stays elevated after a weight training session throughout the day. Whereas with cardiovascular exercise you are burning the fat during that session and lasts an hour or two afterwards. Both types of exercise play an important part on reducing your body fat.

Drinking too much alcohol. If you are consuming too many drinks during the week this can be counter-productive to losing fat. Alcohol actually impairs your metabolism. You don’t have to cut it out completely but you do need to be aware of it’s affect on burning fat. I once consulted with a woman who exercised and ate great but drank too much. As a result her body fat would not go down. After she told me how many drinks she had in a week, I had her cut her intake in half and week later her body fat went down.

So forget about doing a 1000 sit-ups to loose the “pooch”. Focus on these 4 keys to start blasting that fat and feeling great about yourself!
